Hello everyone! Meet Nicole!

Can you tell us a little about yourself and what inspires you to travel?

I’m orginally from Detroit, Michigan and lived in Chicago before moving abroad for over a decade. I’m inspired to travel because I think it is in my nature at this point. I first traveled solo across the States at a young age around 12 or 13. I fell in love with the experience ever since.

How has travel impacted your life and how has it changed you?

Travel has impacted my life positively for sure. It is my passion and I’ve learned so much about myself and others through my travels. I love immersing myself in different cultures. It’s shown me that the world is smaller than we think.

Where was your most recent travel experience and what did it teach you?

My most recent travel experience was to Vietnam for my winter break in January. I meet other expats living there and it showed me how amazing of a country it is. I’m now considering Vietnam as a possible retirement destination in the future.

What has been your most favorite travel experience and why?

I lived in Cape Town, South Africa for a few months doing an internship years ago. I loved my time there. It felt like home.

Do you have any tips or advice for people who want to travel more?

I recommend you allocate a monthly travel fund in your savings. Research, plan, and go!

What are the must-have items in your packing list?

My must haves are my spare battery pack, a scarf, wipes, and comfortable walking shoes.

Why do you think is it important for black women to travel?

I think it’s important for Black women to travel in order to see that there is a big world out there fully of opportunites and experiences for us.

How did learning a new language impact your life?

The first language I studied was French in school. While I didn’t get to use it often and forgot most of it, I do have the confidence to learn other languages like Korean from my time living there. I have a little knowledge of Arabic but truthfully I don’t use it here in Oman where I live. Having the basics downs helps for where ever you’re going though.

Can you tell us about your international education experiences?

I studied abroad in Germany for a year with an Eramus Mundus program and received a scholarship to live in Cape Town for a few months through the joint partnership of universities.

It was an excellent experience and I highly recommend others to consider studying and working abroad if they can.
