- How has travel impacted your life and how has it changed you?
Travel impacted my life in many ways. I have not only been able to see many new places, meet new people, and learn about new cultures but travel has given me the opportunity to really learn about myself. I’ve taken a deep dive into my family history and have intentionally been able to travel to countries that connect with who I am. Travel has not only given me the opportunity to travel but has sparked my passion for helping others to see the world. It has truly been an experience that keeps on giving.

2. Where was your most recent travel experience and what did it teach you?
My most recent travel experience has been traveling to Ireland. I found out through a DNA ancestry test that I am 5th-8th generation Irish and it really took my travels to the next level. I was able to tap into the local culture and customs of Halloween which was very exciting and taught me so much. I realized that intentional travel is one of my favorite and most beneficial forms of travel.

3. Do you have any tips or advice for people who want to travel more?
As cliché as it sounds my main piece of advice to encourage people to travel more is to just do it! Many times the main thing that holds us back from trying something new, especially travel is…US! We get into our head about the financial aspect, about going somewhere new, about who will go with us when in reality if we just book the trip and go we have the possibility of experiencing an adventure of a lifetime. Another piece of advice that I can offer people is to stop waiting on other people. If we waited on others to eat, we’d starve. If we waited on folks to give us directions, we’d be lost. And in most instances we wait for NO ONE. So why do it when it comes to taking the world?

5. Why do you think is it important for Black women to travel?
First off, as a Black woman, I love traveling and breaking down stereotypes. When we step out and into the world, we’re not just tourists; we’re ambassadors of our culture and heritage. It’s a chance to show the world the diversity and richness of black culture, which is often misunderstood or misrepresented, and in the travel space it is highly underrepresented, that is even more so for black women.
Then, there’s the personal growth aspect. Travel pushes us out of our comfort zones. Whether it’s navigating a city where we don’t speak the language or trying new foods, each experience helps us discover new strengths and aspects of ourselves. And I always love to tap into my own personal resilience, adaptability, and resourcefulness that I have when in unfamiliar settings.
I also believe that representation is a huge importance of black women traveling. Seeing other black women traveling inspires more of us to do the same. It’s a cycle of empowerment. When we travel, we pave the way for others in our community to follow suit, showing that the world is truly ours to explore.
In essence, traveling as a Black woman is amazing because it’s a journey of self-discovery, cultural exchange, empowerment, and connection. Every trip we take is a step towards breaking barriers and rewriting the narrative around black travel.

6. Can you tell us a little about yourself and what inspires you to travel?

7. How did attending an HBCU impact your life?
Attending THE North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the best HBCU in the land, profoundly impacted my life in ways I’ll always cherish. Aggie Pride!!! My school spirit runs deep through my veins! This experience didn’t only include obtaining two degrees; it was a journey of self-discovery, cultural enrichment, and empowerment.
A&T offered me a unique space to explore and celebrate my blackness. It was here that I gained a deeper understanding of my heritage and culture. This environment nurtured my pride and identity as Black woman, empowering me to embrace and share my story with the world.
A&T also played a pivotal role in shaping my career and aspirations. It was the nurturing ground where my mentors at A&T recognized my potential and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. Their belief in me led to my first international teaching experience in Germany, a turning point that opened the door to the world of travel. This opportunity was a testament to the supportive and uplifting community that HBCUs foster, where mentors and educators go beyond academics to help students realize their true potential.
The sense of community and shared experiences at an HBCU like NC A&T is unparalleled. It’s a place where lifelong connections are forged. These relationships have been a bedrock of support and inspiration throughout my journey.
Attending an HBCU like North Carolina A&T didn’t just educate me academically; it was a transformative experience that enriched my soul, broadened my perspectives, and set me on a path to change the world, one adventure at a time. It’s a part of who I am and continues to influence who I aspire to be.
