Greetings everyone! Meet Joy!

Tell me a bit about yourself.

My name is Joy and I have lived in Thailand for almost 14 years. I am a Marketing and Project Manager and just finished a work contract with an American company based in Thailand. I am currently opening my own business and transitioning to become a salon owner here in Thailand. I also have a non-profit organization that was started with my mom and sister. The charity helps urban refugees, asylum seekers, and those from the African continent who need help with immigration issues and are detained in Thailand’s Immigration Detention Center. I also host events for women of color in Thailand to connect with one another in a safe environment where they can learn and share resources, advice, tips, knowledge, and more.

How has travel impacted your life and how has it changed you and your family life?

Travel has positively impacted my life. I began traveling abroad when I was 16 years old. That is when I moved to Thailand, and I can say that I have been able to have experiences and create memories I would have never had the opportunity to do in America. I have been able to learn and connect with different people from various cultures, and it has shaped me into a well-rounded person. I believe I am open-minded, non-judgmental, forward-thinking, and optimistic because of my experiences.

What has been your favorite travel experience and why?

My favorite travel experience was when I went to Dubai with my younger sister. It was my first time in the country and we went with a few other friends. We also went to my first concert which was the Afro Fest. I got to see Davido and Tiwa Savage perform along with a few others. It was a really great experience. We also rented out a limo, and bystanders thought Davido was inside. It was hilarious to see the people screaming and running around our limo.

Do you have any tips or advice for people who want to travel more?

My advice for those who want to travel is to simply do it. It sounds so simple, and I know it is easier said than done, but there will always be something you feel is holding you back. Truly it is not the thing that is holding you, it is your mindset and thoughts. Just let go of the hypothetical what ifs, and just get on the plane. Granted, you do need to plan effectively, but once you have those steps planned out, get on the plane! Also, don’t be afraid to travel solo. People can hold you back from exploring the world and living your dreams due to their own fear or shortcomings. Don’t let anything or anyone hold you back, including you.

Why did you relocate to Southeast Asia?

I originally did not have a choice in my move to Southeast Asia. I moved when I was underage. But I decided to stay because I truly enjoy Thailand. The people are so friendly and easy-going. The quality of life in the country is top-notch, and there is a big wellness culture here.

What are your must-have packing items?

My must-have items are usually shoes. Sneakers, heels, sandals, slides, they all need to be packed. Perfume and different scented lotions, and deodorant sprays. My go-to face essentials. Also, hair products and accessories.

Why is it important for women to travel?

I am a firm believer that we are all products of our environment. The way we think, act, and speak are all results of where we were raised and where we currently are. New environments can unlock new things within you. It can help shift your mindset and state of being. Women need to travel to find out new things about themselves. To grow, learn, and relearn.

Where can people follow your journey?

You can follow my journey on TIKTOK and INSTAGRAM: @lovejoymarie. On TikTok I share a lot of tips and helpful information about Thailand and share places to go while in the country. On my Instagram, I share a lot of personal stories and things that are happening in my life in real-time. I also have an INSTAGRAM and FACEBOOK group for my black women meetups/events: @blackwomeninthailand.
